GILLETTE, Wyo. — Here is a summary of notable crimes in and around Gillette over the weekend, obtained through law enforcement reports compiled by the Gillette Police Department and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.

Eluding – 6:49 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20 (GPD)

Officers responded to a disturbance involving two men arguing in the parking lot of the Sundance Lounge. One subject was suspected to be intoxicated and drove off in a 2021 white Chevy when officers arrived, according to GPD Deputy Chief Brent Wasson.

Officers turned on their sirens and the Chevy sped off into the oncoming traffic lane on Highway 59, at one point becoming airborne, Wasson said. The chase was called off for safety, but officers have an idea of the suspect, Wasson said.

Aggravated assault – 12:03 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19

Officers were dispatched to the Fireside Lounge for a report of a patron who had pulled a knife on staff. Officers arrived to find the suspect, a 40-year-old man, pinned to the floor. Staff reported the man had been asked to leave and had left, returned and pulled a knife when being asked to leave again. The footage confirmed this account, and it also showed the suspect pointing the knife at another man, who pushed a table into the suspect. The man was arrested for aggravated assault, trespassing and breach of peace.

DWUI – Friday, Oct. 18

Around 11:10 p.m. a deputy came upon a vehicle with heavy front-end damage abandoned and blocking the lanes on East Lakeway Road and Town Center Road. According to Campbell County Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds, a man was walking away from the wreck. He claimed he had been asleep in the passenger seat while his friend had been driving and that the friend had taken off on foot.

The man gave inconsistent statements, failed field sobriety tests, had a BAC of .123 and had a suspended license, Reynolds said. There was no evidence to suggest anyone was in the passenger seat, he added. The man was arrested.

Hit-and-run – 12:22 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, Wright

Deputies responded to a report by a 60-year-old woman who said her rental vehicle had been struck while she was in a store. Deputies arrived, took pictures and contacted the manager for security footage.

Theft – 11:55 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18

A 18-year old woman reported that a $1,300 cellphone that was supposed to be shipped to her residence was gone, according to Wasson. She said the delivery confirmation photo showed the package at the doorstep of her next-door neighbor. The neighbor denies it, Wasson said.

Destruction of property – Saturday, Oct. 19 (GPD)

City staff reported that a bronze statue had been pushed off Rotary Point. The bolts securing it had been rusty, but otherwise there was no damage to the statue, Wasson said. There are no suspects so far.

Theft – 12:07 a.m. Oct. 19

A caller in Rozet reported a 5- to 6-foot chunk of copper wire stolen from a pumping site. There were no suspects as of Monday morning. Copper is going for about $4.40 a pound, and the stolen wire was valued at around $50.

Family fight – 10:20 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, Rozet

A 38-year-old man reported that his girlfriend of six years hit him with a hammer. Deputies observed blood on his hands, face and nose. The 35-year-old female suspect was later located and arrested. The hammer was not found, Reynolds said.

Drugs – 8:50 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20

Deputies went to check on a woman whose friend had called worried that the woman had been assaulted. Deputies found that there had been no assault, but the 46-year-old woman did have an active arrest warrant, Reynolds said. Small amounts of suspected marijuana and methamphetamine were found in her belongings upon jail intake.

Fraud – 11:59 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18

A 32-year-old man reported being scammed out of $1,800 while trying to buy a Chevy Impala through Facebook Marketplace. The man had paid on Cash App. Officers contacted the woman identified with the online account, but she said she had been hacked in 2022. The man has filed a dispute with Cash App.
